White House/Presidential Recipes Through the Years

Although President's Day, the third Monday in February, is supposed to commemorate only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays, I have taken the liberty of expanding the focus to collect a host of recipes related to White House or Presidential appetites, all gleaned from the Internet. If you know of others feel free to send them to the Red Tape Editor.

President George W. Bush:

  • Recipes from Laura Bush, including baked potato soup, guacamole, vegetable soup, and cowboy cookies
  • Although this Internet find is hard to believe -- The Swift Report: White House Dish: Chef Not to Laura's Taste -- it does provide some very impressive over-the-top recipes for Coca-Cola brined Pilgrim's Pride turkey with Dunkin Donuts old-fashioned cake doughnut sweet and savory stuffing.

President Clinton:

  • President Clinton's Chicken-Broccoli Enchiladas
  • Hillary's Chocolate Chip Cookies, also available for purchase at the Clinton Presidential Library!

President George Herbert Walker Bush:

  • Barbara Bush's Lemon Bars
  • Barbara Bush's Barbeque Chicken
  • And definitely no broccoli recipes!

President Ronald Reagan:

  • Spinach Salad
  • Hamburger Soup

President Jimmy Carter:

  • Country Ham with Redeye Gravy
  • Jimmy Carter's Peanut Butter Pie

President Gerald Ford:

  • Beef Stew with Walnuts, mentioned in Kathy Carrier, "Former first family favored hearty, American meals", Grand Rapid Press (via MLive), February 15, 2006.

President Richard M. Nixon:

  • Spanish Omelet
  • Pat Nixon's Meatloaf

President Lyndon B. Johnson:

  • Texas-Style Barbecued Ribs
  • LBJ Ranch Pickled Okra
  • Pedernales River Chile

President John F. Kennedy:

  • Jackie Kennedy's White House Hot Fruit Dessert Recipe

President Dwight D. Eisenhower:

  • Mamie Eisenhower's Fudge Recipe

President Harry S. Truman:

  • Bess Truman`s Ozark Pudding Recipe
  • President Calvin Coolidge:

    • Grace Coolidge`s Ice Box Cookies

    President Abraham Lincoln:

    • Abraham Lincoln's Scalloped Oysters Recipe
    • Mary Todd Lincoln's White Almond Cake

    President Thomas Jefferson:

    • Thomas Jefferson`s Favorite Bread Pudding
    • Hard to read, but here is Thomas Jefferson's Recipe for Vanilla Ice Cream. A more legible version can be found in A Day in the Life of Thomas Jefferson.
    • Thomas Jefferson's Chicken Fricassee Recipe
    • Thomas Jefferson's Deviled Crab

    President John Adams:

    • Abigail Adams Apple Pan Dowdy

    President George Washington:
Although President Washington never lived in the White House, I have taken the liberty of including these recipes:

    • Crab soup remains a keeper after two centuries - The San Diego Union-Tribune
    • George Washington's Revolutionary Beer, which if brewed properly has a 11% alcohol content according to National Public Radio. Also referred to as Small Beer.
    • Additional recipes from Mt. Vernon, including Martha Washington's Great Cake and Nelly Custis's Recipe for Hoecakes

    Bonus:
While many visitors to the U.S. Capital have wished they lived in the White House, including Senator Bob Dole, all have had the opportunity of enjoying:

    • U.S. Capitol Bean Soup
