As many as 31 Michigan schools may be required to make drastic changes next year if they fail to meet federal standards for the fifth time.
The state is scheduled to release today the latest list of schools that failed to meet the standard called Adequate Yearly Progress, which measures annual improvement in a schools participation in standardized testing, test scores and graduation rates.
As of last year, 99 schools in the state fell into this category, placing Michigan fifth in the country, behind California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey.
Under No Child Left Behind, a school that fails to meet progress targets for five or more years must decide whether it will replace its principal and other staff, convert to a public charter school or turn the schools operations over to the state or a private company.
Last year, 436 Michigan schools failed to meet their annual target, climbing up from 297 the previous year.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, today announced release of a bipartisan House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence report on the strategic global threat posed by Iran and the challenges of addressing its destabilization of the Middle East region.
“Whether actively supporting Hezbollah, attempting to undermine stability in Iraq, or undertaking its current effort to stall and deceive the international community while developing nuclear weapons, Iran poses one of the most unique threats to the world since the crumbling of the Soviet Union,†said Rogers, after releasing the staff report complied for the Subcommittee on Intelligence Policy, which he chairs.
The report, “Recognizing Iran as a Strategic Threat: An Intelligence Challenge for the United States,†is signed by Rogers and Ranking Democrat member Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey.
The document provides an unclassified review of Iran’s extensive nuclear weapons program and other WMD efforts, including the likely possession of chemical weapons such as blister, blood, choking and nerve agents, and the largest stockpile of ballistic missiles in the Middle East, capable of striking American allies from Italy to India or large U.S. military bases in Iraq, Germany, and Afghanistan.
The report also outlines specific policy recommendations to improve intelligence regarding Iran and is available on the web.
Rogers pointed out that Iran has supported extensive terrorist attacks against Israel and the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia which killed 19 American servicemen.
“The international community cannot bury its head in the sand and pretend the Iranian challenge will solve itself,†Rogers said. “As the most active state sponsor of terrorism, the theocratic, authoritarian regime in Tehran uses terrorist proxies to scare the international community into capitulating to their demands.
“The civilized world cannot allow them to succeed.â€
