Meeting began at 12:08 pm

Present: Abood, Venta, Malinowski, Birndorf, Wehr, Dean, and Bryant.
Regrets: Monhankumar, Schenck, Saeed, Sneed, Townsend, Lucas, Gregory-Bryson, and Simon.

Dean: asked the student representatives how the new printers outside of G-200 were working out for the students. Wehr mentioned that the students' course packs were now online, therefore there has been an increase of pages being printed. There have been problems with students picking up printouts belonging to other students. Students can actually watermark their pages with their name to discourage theft.

Bryant: showed the committee the "Library Services for Veterinary Practitioners" booklet she put together for the Michigan Veterinary Conference. It's for practitioners who are not affiliated with the university therefore no longer have access to the library's electronic resources. Abood suggested that the booklets be placed in the graduating seniors' mailboxes.

Bryant: Abood noted a $500.00 donation was made to the CVM library to be used for non-clinical materials. Bryant and Abood solicited ideas for items to be purchased with the donated funds. Items chosen were the Planet Earth DVD (that would circulate) and the Rosetta Stone language skills software (Spanish) which would be placed on a stand alone computer in the library. Dean mentioned that there is an empty carol in the library where a computer can be placed.

Dean: will be taking an educational leave of absence from March 2 until August 10, 2009. During her time away Bryant will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Veterinary Medical Center branch library.

Malinowski: asked the student representatives how often the computers in G-150 are actually used for classwork. The students replied that students usually follow along on the individual computers during class time. They sometime look for additional information on what is being taught in class.

Abood: asked if there was a cheaper paper we could use in the new printers to try and save money. Dean responded that since the printer is high-end we use high-end toner, and the library is already purchasing the least expensive paper offered by the company.

Malinowski: offered to make a CD or DVD of the Camtasia lectures so students will be able to view the recordings after they lose their access to the Angel courses.

Bryant: talked about the library having a display table at the Michigan Veterinary Conference in January 2009. The library staff spoke to a number of attendees, provided demos on using PubMed, handed out notepads and booklets with library information on our materials and services to attendees not affiliated with MSU. The library will have a table at Vet-A-Visit again this year.
Bryant will be pursuing permission to have "Vet School Confidential" transferred to DVD. The library received an additional $2000.00 to purchase books for the Vet Med library. If you have a request please submit it to Sheila Bryant.

Birndorf: The class of 2012 requested the DVD Foaling Fundamentals to be used during Vet-A-Visit. Bryant will order the DVD asap. Malinowski can have a portion of the DVD extracted and looped for viewing.

Venta: is currently serving on the University Library Committee. The last meeting was canceled due to lack of agenda items. Dr. Venta encouraged the committee to submit items to him to take to the University Library Committee.

Malinowski: mentioned that the Camtasia DVD's be put on reserve in the library at the end of the semester. The entire lecture collection may one day be put online.

Wehr: students are complaining about other students leaving items on chairs in the library computer area to save spots for hours at a time. It was suggested that a notice should go out to the classes concerning this practice. Abood suggested that the library place tent cards in the library informing students not to leave their belongings unattended.

More wireless areas are available throughout the Veterinary Medical Center. We should encourage students to use their laptops during the times when study space and computers are at a premium. Students are allowed to use the meeting rooms for study as long as there is no conflict. Unfortunately there is no printing available via wireless. An idea was suggested that patrons could use the stand alone machine (the same one that would house the Rosetta Stone software) to print information from their laptops via a flash drive.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00pm

Minutes respectfully submitted by Sheila Bryant

Meeting began at 12:10pm

Present: Abood, Monhankumar, Dean, Schenck, Saeed, Malinowski, Sneed, Venta, Wehr, Birndorf, and Bryant
Regrets: Townsend, Lucas, Gregory-Bryson, and Simon

Bryant: Reminded committee members to please submit book and journal titles for the library's wish list.
Dr. Saeed recommended the journal, Foodborne Pathogens and Disease.

Dean: The CVM Library will be closed from December 24 to January 4, 2009.

Paper for the student center printers can only be picked up by one of the class representatives. Sneed will speak with the Vet Tech students to select a student center representative. The representatives should check the printer everyday for paper. Sneed will contact Dean and Abood after speaking with the students. There is a list of student representatives in the library.

Students have asked about the library staying open later. A general library survey was done in the spring of 2008, only 18 respondents asked for later library hours. The question was raised, what would it take for the library to stay open later? As of now the library is mainly used for study space and not for the collection. If the students want later hours they would have to come to a consensus and present a valid proposal to Dr. Sprecher.

Dean: Steve Bogdanski will replace the printer outside of G-200 within the next couple of weeks. Dr. Malinowski will follow up with him. Dr. Saeed is willing to donate an extra printer he has to the library.

Students have mentioned the noise level in the library. It is up to the students to police their fellow students concerning the noise level.

Abood: Dr. Abood and Dr. Monhankumar met with the Office of Faculty Development. The office is willing to provide materials to create exhibits in the veterinary medicine center display cases. Drs. Abood and Monhankumar were requested to ask for teaching and learning ideas from different departments for exhibits.

The CVM development office received a donation of $500.00 for non-technical/non-clinical reading and audiovisual material. Student reps will survey their classes for ideas. The CVM library committee will be utilized to make decisions.

Bryant: Last semester said she would look into students being able to fax items from the copy machine in the library. She met with Dr. Sprecher and Sharon Carr, unfortunately the college was not willing to pay for students to fax from the library. Occasionally the library would let students fax school related information from the library. As of Fall 2008 the library can no longer provide fax services. Students will have to go to Owen Hall, the Post Office in the Union, or to Kinkos to fax their information.

Online fax services were suggested. There are issues with getting past the college's firewall and who would pay for the service. Online fax services will be investigated further.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00pm.

Meeting began at 12:10 pm

Present: Abood,Bryant, Dean, Malinowski, Saeed, Schenck, Simon, Sneed, and Wehr

Regrets: Mohankumar, Townsend, Venta, and Heisler

Dean: The library has identified a student rep from among the 1st through 3rd year vet students who will be responsible for picking up paper and toner for the student center. Last summer usage of the printer in the student center diminished. Linda Cleeves arranged with a summer student to stock printers. She will make the same arrangement for Summer, 2008.

Statistics show that use of the library copy machines has dropped. Students are more often utilizing printers One of the copiers will be removed in the summer.

A particular reserved book was checked out on a Sunday, before a Histology exam and not returned. Committee members discussed whether it is possible to exact heavier fines on patrons who keep books longer than the 2 hr. loan period. Other suggestions included charging a nuisance fee of 2 times the book's cost or limiting certain titles for checkout by Vet. Med. patrons only. Bryant will check with Circulation to see if there are viable alternatives.

Bryant: Reported on the additional course and research guides she created. She mentioned receiving positive feedback from the 3rd year class on the clinic student guide. If anyone needs a specific course or research guide, Bryant will be happy to create one.

The library had a display table at the Michigan Veterinary Conference for the 5th straight year. Library staff spoke with over 200 attendees and provided information on searching and using PubMed. Bryant created and passed out brochures on searching the Veterinary Medicine lituerature within PubMed and also handed out a pamphlet on free web resources for practitioners unable to access the library's electronic resources.

Bryant received a patron request to have the library purchase the AVMA Business Reports. The committee decided that the reports would be useful for the 4th year students who are looking for employment and the 1st year students attending the business class.

Library Visioning: Bryant asked the committee members to brainstorm about how they would envision library resources in 3-5 years. Ideas that were generated included: Acquiring more electronic veterinary books, holding a greater number of years of the print journal titles, enabling alumni to have access to our electronic resources, and reconfiguring the current library space to accommodate more collaborative learning styles; perhaps building another conference room and/or getting more computers/printers.

Dr. Abood asked if it is possible for students to use the scan and fax functions on the existing library copiers? Bryant will check into this.

Dr. Malinowski suggested using a program that enables a fax to be sent via the web.

Wehr suggested that Bryant purchase:
Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy - 3rd. ed. and
Histology: a text and atlas

Minutes: Bryant

Began at 12:08 p.m.

Present:Abood, Bryant, Dean, Gregory-Bryson, Malanowski, Saeed, Simon, and Wehr
Regrets: Mohankumar, Townsend, Schenck, Sneed, Venta, and Heisler

Introduction: Welcome to Mandi Wehr, Class of 2011 our newest member.

Dean: Security gates were installed in summer of 2007. Statistics are counted for the number of people who use the library based on quantity of use. Ave. use for September 2007 was 387 per day.

The library printer is back up and running after a 2 week down time. Supplies are getting to the student center via the student reps.

Power outlets and strips were added to the library so that more patrons can use laptops. The library purchased the power strips. One was in the library less than 2 days before being taken. Dr. Saeed suggested that a courteous but firm statement about the negative effects of recent thefts of library materials be placed in strategic places within the College or library.

Bryant: JAVMA and AJVR Journals now have a 15 year run in the CVM Library. As more journals change from print to electronic, we may look to add more years.
The library now has a full run of Phi Zeta Research Proceedings from 1990-present.

The Security gates are deterring textbook thefts.

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal, Food Animal, Equine and Exotic Practices are now available on-line at the cost of approximately $4,000.00 per year. The Committee brain-stormed ways to garner recurring electronic format funds while keeping print copies. Bryant will explore ways to shift current budget allotments and find possible new funding sources to allow for their purchase. Bryant will need to poll faculty about whether the electronic version is really wanted.

Bryant demonstrated several types of research/course guides that she's created for graduate student use. She will offer small tutorial sessions for students moving up to clinics in the spring semester. It was suggested that library research instruction might also likely occur for the Student Research Club and new faculty.

Bryant is interested in talking with course moderators to make sure that the library has copies of the books that they are requiring or recommending for a given course.

Round-Robin:
Gregory-Bryson asked for some animal behavior books to be included in the textbook purchases that Bryant makes. She will forward a couple of titles to Bryant.

Rob Malinowski: Creating an Intro. to Research Methods course and would like to see if library skills could be an add-in to course content. He too is interested in contacting the Student Research Club for possible ideas. Simon suggested a wet-lab helping participants to utilize research skills.

Dean: Asked about a possible process for withdrawing outdated slides and VHS tapes from the library. She will look into prioritizing surgical procedures and other key materials that could be digitized. Out-dated materials and formats will have specific target dates for withdrawal from the Audio Visual collection.

Submitted by Dean

Present: Abood, Bryant, Dean, Gregory-Bryson, Heisler, Malinowski, Saeed, Simon, Townsend, & Venta

Absent: Kryda, Lucas, Mohankumar, Schenck, Sneed

1.	Missing Books: Bryant expressed concerns over recently missing books from librarys reserved collections. Discussion ensued on ways to address this issue.
Should there be an electronic gate for library materials?
Costs and possible funding sources for a gate?
Advertise for missing books amongst senior vet students and recent grads that will be getting rid of some of their unused books.
Create a behind-the-circulation-desk collection of the most used books for checkout

2.	Research Guide for Clinic Students: Bryant has created a draft guide based on one from the University of Tennessee. Please e mail comments to Bryant.

3.	Library Updates
Library had a presence at MVC that was successful
Bryant will print a PubMed search strategy folder to be placed in F/S/S mailboxes
Bryant will attend Vetavisit again this year to provide information on the human-animal bond
New web page for MSU Libraries
Vet. Med. page will have another new look at some point during the spring semester
Venta: asked about the up arrows that appear in the Main Library home page. Bryant will check on this and get back with him

4.	Library Hours: Dean
Working hours for Dean at Vet. Med. Library are reduced to half-time for the spring semester. She is in typically available every morning from 7-9am and again in the afternoons from 1-4pm
Spring Semester Breaks for MSU & CVM:
Mar 2 (Fri) 7:00am to 5:00pm
Mar 3 - Mar 4 Closed
Mar 9 (Fri) 7:00am to 5:00pm
Mar 10 - Mar 11 Closed
Mar 12 - Mar 16 7:00am to 5:00pm

5.	Old Business
FAQ Page: Bryant asked whether this should be a web site or an interactive tutorial using a program such as Camtasia? Perhaps this could be linked to the white space when the new web page is established? This information could be targeted to interns and residents.
CVM Orientation : Bryant will speak with Hilda regarding including printed library materials for orientation packets

6. Round Robin:
Townsend: Is it possible to have more than the current 10 printed years of JAVMA/AJVR housed in the CVM Library? Also, may bound journals be sent from the Main Library?
Bryant: will check into adding the held years to these volumes. Also, may bound journals be sent from the Main Library?
Dean: Circulation policy precludes sending bound journals less than 10 years old through the library courier system. Dean will check with Circulation to see if Faculty Authorization forms can be filled out here and then processed at Main for those faculty members wanting to borrow bound journals.
Abood: How is the paper order situation with the new student center? Are we using less paper? Dean is ordering more paper, not less.
Gregory-Bryson: May we have a tray for printer jobs that are waiting to be picked up? It would help people to know NOT to recycle jobs that have not yet been picked up.
Malinowski will look into getting all library computers to boot up to the CVM Library page instead of the CCM home page.

Present: Abood, Bryant, Dean, Gregory-Bryson,Heisler, Kendall, Lucas, Malinowski, Mohankumar, Saeed, Schenck, & Townsend

Regrets: Kryda, Sneed, Venta

1. Missing Library Books: Bryant
Summer inventory was taken of the collection. Forty-two latest edition books are missing. The library will be checking around the clinic to try to identify these items and get them returned to the collection.

2. Online FAQ: Bryant
Asked committee members for feedback on this resource page. Quite a lively discussion ensued on how best to engage students in learning to understand and use library resources. Suggestions were made to add links to the existing library web resource pages, use an audiovisual program for short instruction takes, revisit Learn-at-Lunch type programs, build library instruction into VIPS or other research type courses and/or add a library information course to the new curriculum. Library staff will continue to explore possibilities to promote library learning and use of scholarly resources.

3. Veterinary Clinics of North America - Online: Bryant
MSU Libraries is pursuing talks with Elsevier to affordably obtain subscription rights to the online versions of this series. Because MSU has several medical schools, Elsevier is reluctant to make just the VCNA series available online. The offered cost to MSU Library is still too high. Talks will continue.

4. Bibliography of Teaching Articles: Bryant
A bibliography of 10 excellent articles devoted to teaching was added to the Leadership Development collection. The bibliography was first cited in The Teaching Professor. Dr. Monhankumar suggested that other articles and books pertinent to CVM Faculty/Staff teachers be made available from the CVM Library's website. He agreed to work with Bryant in making suggestions of what should be included.

5. Weil Endowment Fund: Please make collection (one time purchases) suggestions in order to use this money to help support the CVM Library. Books or software items were suggested.

6. Library Web Blog: Dean
Check out the News blog on the CVM Library's web page. New books are automatically added as they are received. Library news is also a part of this blog feature. Check out the site and make comments about what's provided on the web pages. In December 2006 the MSU Libraries will have a whole new look.

7. Finals Week & Holiday Hrs.: Dean
The library will remain open until 11pm during finals week. From Dec. 18-January 5th, 2007 the library will revert to 8am-5pm hours and be closed on weekends. Also: The library will be closed between the week of Christmas and New Year, Dec. 27-29, 2006.

8. Announcements: Dr. Abood
The student lounge is up and running. Paper/Printer issues are being handled through the Academic Programs Office instead of the library.

9. Leadership & Mentoring Books: Abood
We have a growing collection of books dedicated to leadership development and mentoring available to CVM. Make suggestions of items that we can purchase of the collection. Let's get these collections better publicized.

10. Other:
Malinowski is working with Elsevier to figure out ways to network individual's electronic books at CVM.

CVM Library Committee Meeting Minutes

February 16, 2006

Present: Abood, Bryant, Dean, Gregory-Bryson, Heisler, Monhankumar, Saeed, Schenck, Townsend, & Venta

Regrets: Lockman, Lucas, Malinowski, Sneed

1. On-line/print journal changes - Bryant

Eight Blackwell Journal titles are now received only in an electronic format. Bryant will send an all-college email to that effect and advertise this in Inside CVM.

JAVMA/AJVR/AAHA Journals are now available eletronically from MSU Libraries E-Journals. Users will be taken directly to the organization's web page. Connection is through IP addresses at MSU.

Bryant is investigating Elesevier packaging prices for Veterinary Clinics of North America. Elsevier requires that institutions purchase all of the Clinics of North America titles. Selected groups are not available for separate purchase.

The print Journal List that is so popular for users of the Vet. Med. Library is helpful to have available from the web site.

2. Tutotial - Bryant

Is interested in knowing what the most practical approach might be for a web-based tutorial. The tutorial that currently sits on the CVM Library's site is unwieldy and may not help users get pertinent questions answered. Some committee generated suggestions were to offer an FAQ page or to put up a Power Point like presentation that might be available for students in VIPS classes or Clerkships. Tutorials developed at other institutions could also be used as pointers for people who want to do more in-depth research.

Committee members overwhelmingly agreed to keeping the journal list of what is held in CVM Library on the web-site even though it is not a complete listing of all the veterinary medicine related journals held in the MSU Libraries.

3. CVM Library Web Page Changes - Dean

Dean will be asking committee members to view and comment upon the on-going changes made to the web page. While each branch library page has a similar template conformity, there may be things unique to CVM that this branch library will want to include. For example, we have no e-token printers in CVM. It seems that the web space used for e-token printing or other non relevant items could be used differently.

4. MelCat Borrowing - Dean

Dean showed the committee the MelCat catalog function. She explained that loan periods for Faculty/Staff/Students of CVM library materials are now consistent with MelCat users' borrowing time frames. Items identified as Reserved are not loanable to users of MelCat.

5. LVT Library Committee Rep. - Dean

Dr. LeBlanc has been invited to ask a VTH LVT staff member to participate on the CVM Library Comm. He has passed the invitation on to the LVT supervisors. Perhaps there will be someone in place by Fall, 2006.

6. Bibliographic Instruction - Bryant/Dean

It was suggested that a short questionnaire, directed toward student library users, might help library staff know how to best provide library instruction. It might also be helpful to come up with an FAQ section on the web site to answer these kinds of questions.

7. Around the Table:

Gregory-Bryson-2009: Request for the library to be open longer evening hrs. Mon.-Thurs. Library staff is reluctant this semester because use during late evening hrs. is very low. The library will extend hrs. during finals week until 11pm. Is it possible to have a color copier in the library? This request will be made to ITC. Can the library purchase a new hole punch? That will be done.

Heisler-2008: When will the student lounge be ready for use? Will this area have quiet study space available for late-night studying? Abood said that plans are that the lounge area will be ready by July, 2006. It will contain space for relaxation and group study. We will need to be mindful of how this area might impact library use and be ready to make adjustments accordingly.

Bryant: Has more money left in the budget for new books. She will again be representing the CVM Library this April at VetaVisit with her companion-animal poster. She also will take the opportunity to participate this year in People-Pets & Vets, a career conference aimed at area grade school children.

Schenck-AHDL: Occasionally has connection troubles when using PubMed from the library's server. Dean suggested that she contact library staff so that we can trouble-shoot individual problems or report major ones to Library Systems.

Saaed-LCS: Had some questions about what e-journals are available from MSU Libraries web site under Science Direct. Bryant explained that each library's licensing agreement with electronic journal providers determines what journals are available on-line. Saaed will provide a list of those journals he thinks that the MSU Libraries should carry for his type of research needs.

Minutes: M. Dean 2/16/06

CVM Library Committee

October 19, 2005

Present: Abood, Bryant, Dean, Gregory-Bryson, Heisler, Kryda, Malinowski, Saeed, Schenck, Sneed, Townsend, Venta

Regrets: Cleeves, Lockman, Lucas, Monhankumar

1. Library Updates: Dean

MSU Libraries has a new webface as does the CVM Library. Check it out at http://www.lib.msu.edu/coll/branches/vetmed/ Committee members are encouraged to provide feedback to Dean so that information updates may be incorporated.

Library holiday hours at the end of Fall 2005 will be as follows: Dec. 19-22, Mon.-Thurs. 8:00am-5:00pm, Dec. 23-Jan.2 Closed, & Jan.3-Jan.8 8:00am-5:00pm Mon.-Friday & Closed on the weekend. Typically the VTH is closed between Christmas and the New Year. Since the library is the past has experienced so little use, the intension is to be closed. This is a good time to check with groups to see if there are special needs during this time frame.

Prior to now Vet. Med. Library books have been unavailable for checkout to patrons using MelCat. MSU Libraries is a participant in MelCat and library administrators want MSU Libraries to loan materials on an equal footing with other system libraries. Dean would like committee members to help library staff identify those items that should be placed on reserve so that they will remain protected from MelCat borrowing. Rationale: Items circulating in the MelCat system are loaned for 3 weeks with a one time renewal of 3 weeks. Those CVM Library materials that are not reserved would be available to circulate to MelCat patrons for up to 6 wks. Since our own loans periods to CVM & MSU patrons are 2 weeks, we want to make sure that heavily used items are appropriately reserved for CVM patrons. Out of print items and serials that have previously circulated as books are good examples of items that might want to be tagged for reserve.

2. Leadership Development Collection: Abood

The Leadership Development Committee, part of the CVM Futuring Initiative, has procured funds for purchasing books related to leadership and leadership development. Several books now reside in this collection, housed in the library and are available for checkout by CVM members only. The library will work out a way to check these materials out to DCPAH employees as well. This collection has a 3 week loan period and borrowers must be able to show that they are connected to the CVM or DCPAH in order to borrow.

3. SCAVMA Summer Project & Display: Kryda

Kryda gave an overview of her summer work project, incorporating old SCAVMA materials into University Archives for preservation. A display of the facsimiles and their historical merits is outside of the library. Kryda invited those who were interested in looking at originals to contact staff at Univ. Archives in Conrad Hall. She also reported on her tour of the Special Collection Library that houses the rare veterinary medicine manuscripts and texts. Dr. Peter Berg is available for tours of the collection and can be contacted at berg@mail.lib.msu.edu

4. Library Collection Updates: Bryant

The CVM Library's web tutorial has been converted to an application of Breeze. It contains both text and voice, guiding patrons through a basic set of steps that might be followed in order to learn how to conduct library research.

Library endowment funds can be used for the purchase of additional copies of heavily used library books. Committee members are invited to speak with their respective constituents to submit purchase suggestions.

Beginning in January 2006, 8 journals that are currently received in both print and electronic formats will only be available in electronic. In order to keep print versions of these title the library would be charged a 20% surcharge. The older editions of the print titles will remain in the CVM Library the requisite 10 years and then be sent to the Main Library.

Library staff were involved in the AVMA's site visit in March 05. A tour of the facility was given after the site team asked library staff several questions about collection use and accessibility. In addition, the credentialing body for the Veterinary Technology program paid a visit to the library in Oct 05. No questions were asked of library staff. Outcomes of the visits are pending.

Bryant is writing a CAB Abstracts handout for the 2006 MVC that is similar to the PubMed handout that was available to MVC participants in 2005. She is also preparing literature that will help non-MSU veterinarians access free online scholarly publications related to veterinary medicine.

5. Concers/Issues Raised:

Sneed asked if the library had committee representation from VTH technicians. Dean will speak with Dr. LeBlanc about getting employed techs. representation.

Gregory-Bateson: Students are needing more computer space. Are colored printers available? Malinowski pointed out that ITC has 4-5 computers that can be used on a first come-first served basis. There is also a colored printer, scanner, CD/DVD burner and a zip drive availabe in this area. Dean reported that 6 new computers have been ordered for the library.

Kryda asked if the library would be extending hrs. during finals week. Dean indicated that evening hours would extend to 11:00pm during finals week and perhaps the Thurs. evening before finals if there was to be a final exam given on the Friday before.

Malinowski will check into requests from Schenck about log-in use for instructors from DCPAH who need to use computers in CVM and who don't typically have Novell logins.

Venta asked if wireless access is available in the library. ITC is still in a testing mode but users report strong signals both in and outside the library.

Venta reports that he is on the University wide library committee and will check into MelCat issues in that venue.
