Ottawa, August 2, 2007 – Ever searched endlessly on the Web trying to find the full-text article you need? The new Pay Per Article service offered by NRC-CISTI, the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, can help. Pay Per Article allows any researcher to search a database of more than 11 million articles and pay by credit card to view and print those selected. No pre-registration, user name or password required.

"This new service is a breakthrough in NRC-CISTI's document delivery efforts, integrating free search capability with simplified registration, ordering and payment processes in a single, easy-to-use interface," says Michael Ireland, Director, Information Access and Delivery, NRC-CISTI. "Once clients find the articles they need, they add them to a shopping cart, proceed to the checkout, pay for their purchases, and view their articles in short order. It's as easy as 1,2,3,4,5."

The new service provides speedy access to an extensive selection of scientific, technical and medical articles held locally in NRC-CISTI's electronic and print journal collections. Articles that are not available through the Pay Per Article service remain accessible through CISTI's catalogue.

"The Pay Per Article option gives researchers in science, technology and medicine a simple way to find and use the information they need," says Simon Boisseau, Marketing Manager of Future Science Group. "It also increases the exposure of our journals, which means that more clients see our titles and cite them in their research papers."

Each article costs CAN$12, plus publisher fees and applicable taxes. Users see the full and exact cost of items added to their shopping carts and pay by credit card using Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

Once NRC-CISTI verifies payment, users receive confirmation of their purchases and an e-mail with a link to the items purchased. Articles from NRC-CISTI's electronic collection (indicated with a green mouse symbol), are available for viewing immediately. Articles in the print collection (indicated with a red flying envelope symbol) must first be scanned, and users receive a link by e-mail when the article is ready to be viewed and printed.

Access to all articles is for one view, one print. Access begins when the link is opened and ends when the link is closed. Users may not save the document to their desktop.

We had a trial of this product a few years ago and decided not to subscribe because it did not default to MSU holdings and led students to materials that we did not own. They have fixed this problem.

What does Reference Universe do? It's an index to reference works. Unlike the catalog, Reference Universe searches the titles of articles and indexes within the reference works, making the contents accessible. The database is based on reference works reviewed by ARBA, Choice and Booklist since 1985. Reference Universe will also review titles for inclusion by request.

It searches both print and electronic titles. Note that for the purposes of this trial, titles in Main Library Reference and selected electronic titles were added, so our holdings are incomplete (no Gale Virtual Reference Library titles). This will be remedied if we subscribe. There should be enough titles in there for you to comment on whether you like it.

Once you have completed a search, click on "sort" and then you will be able to list electronic titles first. If you find an electronic title, you should be able to link to it easily. There do seem to be some problems right now--Titles where we have e-access to the table of contents only seem to be listed as electronic books.

Works that we don't own will easily visible because they will not have hotlinks to our catalog records.
