						<description>&lt;p&gt;Long-time resident, sports enthusiast, organizer, coach and sports journalist for El Renacimiento Gilbert Salazar, Sr. passed away June 22, 2012 at the age of 75.  El Renacimiento  was published in Lansing from the early 1970&#039;s through 1989.  Salazar&#039;s byline included articles on Latin American boxing, wrestling, bowling  Leagues, Golden Gloves, youth to over-60 teams, women and mens teams acompanied by photos.  He was co-author of Lansing&#039;s Latin American leagues : history in the making (2000).  Salazar&#039;s family and co-author No&amp;#233; Hernandez donated a rich cache of 800 photographs, league schedules and by-laws, news clippings, and other notes as well as 4 league championship trophies to the Cesar E. Chavez Collection.  Materials are currently being processed. In May, the Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale will feature a sweeping retrospective exhibition entitled &quot;My Life Through My Paintings&quot; by member artist Nora Chapa Mendoza, a former recipient of the Michigan Governor&amp;#8217;s Arts Award, which named her Artist of the Year in 1999. She was also the recipient of the Wayne County Cultural Council Artist Award in 2011. This Chicana artist was born in Texas and studied at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. Her work is a part of many important collections across the United States, including at the main office of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, the General Motors corporate offices, the Ford offices in Rockefeller Plaza, New York, and the collection of Gilberto Cardenas, the second largest collector of Chicano art. Nora Mendoza is also part of the national archives of the University of Notre Dame. Some of Nora&#039;s international highlights have been an exhibit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt and three exhibits in Cuba, among many others around the world. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The reception will take place on Friday, May 4 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will give the public an opportunity to meet the artist as well as view the exhibition. In May, the Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale will feature a sweeping retrospective exhibition entitled "My Life Through My Paintings" by member artist Nora Chapa Mendoza, a former recipient of the Michigan Governor&#8217;s Arts Award, which named her Artist of the Year in 1999. She was also the recipient of the Wayne County Cultural Council Artist Award in 2011. This Chicana artist was born in Texas and studied at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. Her work is a part of many important collections across the United States, including at the main office of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, the General Motors corporate offices, the Ford offices in Rockefeller Plaza, New York, and the collection of Gilberto Cardenas, the second largest collector of Chicano art. Nora Mendoza is also part of the national archives of the University of Notre Dame. Some of Nora's international highlights have been an exhibit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt and three exhibits in Cuba, among many others around the world. </p>

<p>The reception will take place on Friday, May 4 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will give the public an opportunity to meet the artist as well as view the exhibition.
