The state Senate is in a position to dramatically improve transparency and help restore a weary public's faith in government lost during the Flint water crisis.

We applaud the House's passage of a bill that would extend open records laws to the governor's office and Legislature. The overwhelming bipartisan support was also commendable.

The Michigan Legislature is actually one of the younger governing bodies among the 50 states, with an average age of about 52, according to an LSJ analysis of lawmakers' biographies on Gongwer News Service. Pew said in a December report that the average age of all legislatures is 56.

Millennials make up 13% of lawmakers here, compared to just 5% nationwide.

Yet Millennials still are underrepresented at the Capitol considering they are are 28% of Michigan's voting population. Nationwide, Millennials are 31% of the voting-age population, Pew says.

On Sept. 26, 1981 tennis champion Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan. Her parents, Richard and Oracene, later relocated to Los Angeles, and Serena and her four sisters (Lyndrea, Isha, Yetunde, and Venus) grew up in Compton, a L.A. suburb. At young ages, both Serena and Venus became excellent tennis players and began to compete. With the passage of time, both sisters have made a name for themselves as professional athletes.

On Sept. 26, 1963, an elephant that was part of the King Shows and Circus rampaged through Lansing. Rajje, the elephant, was performing at a local shopping center when it became irritated and rebelled against its trainer. Rajje spent about 15 minutes rampaging through Arlan's Department store, causing thousands of dollars in damage, before leaving through a back exit. The police went on a two-mile chase through Lansing after the elephant, who tried to throw a car out of its way. Police eventually put down the 13-year-old, 3,000-pound elephant in a barrage of gunfire.
