Michigan State will unveil its $24.5 million north end zone expansion Monday, August 25. The facility will have a 4,500 square foot home locker room that will be named for Rachel Adams, the mother of former Spartan Flozell Adams, who gave $1.5 million to the project.

U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a longtime fighter for civil rights, visits East Lansing on Monday as part of East Lansing and Michigan State University’s One Book, One Community campaign.

Lewis — the only surviving member of the so-called “Big Six” civil rights leaders during the 1960s — is a Democrat from Georgia who has served in Congress since 1987.

Eleven thousand years ago, an adult male mastodon walked alone along the edge of a pond in what is now Michigan. The elephant-like animal stepped unexpectedly on a large log in its path. Its front leg slipped and, losing its balance, the mastodon suddenly moved its hind leg to steady itself. Regaining its composure, it continued along the shore.

On August 25, 1990, Cecil Fielder became the first Tiger to hit a home run over the left field roof at Tiger Stadium. The shot came in a 14-4 win over the Oakland Athletics. Harmon Killebrew, Frank Howard and Mark McGwire are the only others to accomplish this feat.

Tom Skerritt, Detroit Born Actor

Thomas Roy "Tom" Skerritt (born August 25, 1933) is an American actor who has appeared in more than forty films and more than two hundred television episodes since 1962. He is best known for his roles in MASH, Alien, Top Gun, A River Runs Through It, Up in Smoke, and the television series Picket Fences.

On Aug. 25, 1895, John Smalley -- Michigan's most notorious train robber, who bragged to have stolen more than $1 million -- was shot dead by deputies during a shootout in McBain. Smalley had been suspected in numerous robberies for two years, but had always succeeded in getting off due to a lack of evidence or by avoiding authorities.

Joseph Gibbons, of Adrian MI, received a patent for a "Grain Drill" ("Improvement in Seed Planters"); first truly practical seeding machine (combined a grain drill with cavities to deliver seed and a device for regulating the volume).
