Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed an executive order that will immediately implement several recommendations from the Long Term Care Task Force, fulfilling a promise to thousands of citizens that Michigan will improve its long term care system.

Attorney General Mike Cox announced today (June 1) the results of two studies conducted by his office that reveal almost 10% of the employees caring for Michigan’s vulnerable adults have criminal backgrounds that include homicide, criminal sexual conduct, weapon charges, and drug offenses. The findings come three years after Michigan's first law requiring criminal background checks of prospective residential care facility employees went into effect.

Ann Swaney from the Osterlin Library, Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City forwarded the following photos of a shadowbox received from the Superintendent of Documents and a bookmark celebrating their 40th Anniversary as a Federal Depository (1964-2004). Ann also reports she has been a librarian at Northwestern Michigan College for 20 years and the government documents librarian for 15.

I recently received a message from the a student in South Africa asking "where did the term red tape come from?".

According to Herbert Kaufman's Red Tape, Its Origins, Use, and Abuses (Washington, D.C., Brookings Institution, 1977), the term red tape derives from the ribbon once used to tie up legal documents in England. [See Red Tape, Issue 1, Jan.-Feb. 1979]

Janet Schneider has retired from the Schoolcraft College Library. I've been working with documents in various ways since 1969 and I admit that one of the reasons I applied for the job at Schoolcraft 15 years ago was because of the depository position. Teens who get too old for the foster care system need better support to survive on their own.

People:

Volunteer mentoring and tutoring programs to help kids aging out of the foster care system are sponsored by private agencies including Catholic Social Services of Lansing/St. Vincent Home, Lutheran Social Services, and Child and Family Services-Capital Area. Michigan State University has started a scholarship fund for students who leave foster care.
