Renovations Update: Carpet Installation

New carpet should be installed this week. It looks like it will be installed Thursday, July 29 barring any unforeseen circumstances. There could be fumes and some noise associated with this. We're continuing to move and vacuum books. Books still must be paged by requesting them from the front desk. Thousands of children will march in Washington DC, Mexico City and Los Angeles to demand from Pres. Obama that they not be separated from their undocumented parents. Los The fathers and mothers are deported without any provisions of care for the children abandoned in their homes left to neighbors, friends, relatives and if lucky to a pnon deported parent. There are stories of terror when they are placed in foster homes and their deported parents cannot locate them and the children end up adopted by American couples. Especially if...

Expanded Access to online Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps

In 2010 MSU Libraries purchased a second Sanborn module which contains detailed historic maps of 12 major metropolitan areas in the United States (see list below). This module has better navigation and features than our Michigan module. Sanborn Geo Edition can locate maps by searching a street address, by specifying a latitude/longitude coordinate, or by clicking on a Google Maps interface. Dates of maps vary, but generally for each location you will see 6 to 8 editions between 1880-1960. An MSU NetID is required for access. Visitors may use one of our "Selected Resources" computers...

Renovations Update: Finishing up the shelves and moving books

The shelves are in! Now the workers are tweaking the system that moves them to make sure it operates properly. We are also starting to interfile our books and journals into one call number run starting on the new compact shelving. We're still vacuuming too. We'll be vacuuming the public computers this week too so we hope to have those fully operational very soon. Books still must be requested from the front desk. Marty Quiroz, passed away earlier this morning. I did not know him well, just having met him a month ago, but over the years I heard many wonderful things about him. Friday evening June 25, 2010 at the close of the Imagenes de la Revolución Exhibit in Detroit,I shared a few moments with him again. He was with two of his close friends in Mexicantown at a restaurant across the street and they called me to have a shot of tequila with them...in the parking lot...out of the trunk of his car...My mom warned me about stuff like that, but I did it anyway.
