MSU Libraries' first hosted-and-served set of digital topographic maps is of Ethiopia mapped at a scale of 1:250,000, prepared by the US Defense Mapping Agency Joint Operations Graphic. The finding aid linked from the library catalog displays the sheet boundaries and provides links to download jpg previews, 400 ppi TIF files, and 400 ppi GeoTIFF files.

Landscan is a world population dataset at approximately 1 km resolution (30" X 30"). It represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours). The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. The Map Library has a new look, with the service counter in a new location nearer the entrance. This change is part of a sequence of events that will eventually lead to a Geospatial Technology Area directly across from the service counter.




Map Library Welcomes new A3 Scanner

The MSU Map Library welcomes a new A3 scanner for flatbed scanning.

The Epson accommodates materials up to 12.2" x 17.2", will scan up to 2400 x 4800 ppi resolution and features 48-bit color. Flatbed scanning remains 5 cents per scan. The Epson complements our 42" HP roll scanner ($1 per scan) to enable scanning of bound publications and more fragile items.



USGS releases new Michigan topographic maps

The United State Geological Survey has released 2011 editions of the new "US Topo", the new generation of digital topographic maps. In October 2009, the USGS began to load US Topo maps to the USGS Store distribution point where the maps are available for free download. We have been waiting for the approximately 1,500 Michigan sheets to be released which just happened recently.


Search or zoom to your place of interest. Place a red marker on a location of interest, then click on the red marker to see a list of available maps. In addition to the new 2011 maps, you will also see...
