BUS 291: Business Intelligence Resources is a three-credit course being offered in the Fall of 2015. In the course, students will learn how to use advanced web search techniques and specialized business databases and how to critically evaluate information regardless of the source.

Students will be able to significantly reduce the time they spend searching for quality information and gain a competitive edge in class assignments, projects and job searches by taking this course. Laura Leavitt is on the editorial board of an open-access journal that will launch soon: Ticker: The Academic Business Librarianship Review. Ticker is published by the Academic Business Library Directors (ABLD) and is a forum for the exchange of the research, best practices, and innovative thinking in business librarianship and business library management. Susan Cain is co-founder of Quiet Revolution and author of the New York Times bestseller, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in A World That Can’t Stop Talking, which was named the #1 Best Book of the Year by Fast Company magazine, which also named her one of its Most Creative People in Business. ISI Emerging Markets EMIS is a great resource for emerging market company and industry information and we now have unlimited access to the Professional version.

The Companies section now includes an analytical workspace which can be used to build valuation models and analytical tools which can be used for aggregation analysis, concentration analysis, DuPont analysis, and statistical distribution.

The DealWatch section tracks completed deals, the top financial and legal advisers in deals, and deal intent.

The database PrivCo provides info on private companies, private market deals, venture capital funding and private investors. PrivCo recently released the PrivCo 100 rankings, which ranks the top 100 companies in the U.S. based on 2013 revenue.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the term, a phablet is a smartphone with a screen size from 5.5 inches to less than 7.0 inches. The iPhone 6 Plus is an example. According to the mobile analytics firm Flurry, phablet activation increased 225% year over year during the week of Christmas, taking share away from full-size tablets whose activations were down 35.3%.
