Visitors check out sample copies of THE 99 before the film screening.

More than 50 people attended the library's showing of the documentary film Wham! Bam! Islam! on Thursday night, as well as the post-film discussion.

Wham! Bam! Islam! tells the story of Naif Al-Mutawa and his quest to create "THE 99", the first team of superheroes from the Muslim world. The documentary follows Al-Mutawa as he dodges cultural minefields and confronts the harsh realities of the global marketplace, while pursuing his vision to bring new heroes to children around the world.

On display were a selection of English-language issues of THE 99, just arrived at the library from the publisher in Kuwait. They can also be read in the Special Collections Reading Room.

There was a lively post-film discussion, led by Dr. Salah D. Hassan, a faculty member in MSU's Muslim Studies Program and the Department of English.

The program was co-sponsored by MSU Muslim Studies Program, MSU Comics Forum, and Michigan Humanities Council as part of the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collaboration.
