Digital Topographic Maps: Somalia and Ethiopia

Categories:

The MSU Map Library has added several new sets of digital topographic maps:

  • Ethiopia at 1:250,000 by the Ethiopian Mapping Agency YaʼItyoṗyā kārtā śerā derejet
  • Somalia at 1:250,000 prepared from Joint Operations Graphic series 1501 (JOGs)
  • Somalia at 1:200,000 by the Soviet mapping agency Главное управление геодезии и картографии при Совете Министров СССР

These new sets join our Ethiopian JOGs which were added in June 2012. All sheets are available in JPG preview, TIF, and GeoTIF. In the future we plan to add some sheets of Somalia at 1:100,000. None of these sets are entirely complete, but between them all give us complete topographic coverage of Somalia and Ethiopia.

Also watch in the future for topographic maps of Brazil at 1:250,000 and part of Rio de Janeiro state at 1:50,000.

These resources have been licensed for use by the MSU community. For off-campus access, users must have a MSU NetID and password. Our contracts with the vendors restrict off-campus access to currently enrolled MSU students and current employees. MSU Alumni are not included in these groups.

Visitors to the main library may also access these maps at one of our Selected Resources computers. The main library has eight workstations on the first floor near the entrance, and we also have one workstation in the Map Library which is inside the main library on the 3rd floor of the west wing.
