QGIS Workshop 2: Georeferencing 10/10
QGIS Workshop at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station 10/8

Map reading/navigation workshop

Location:  Map Library CTL and Outdoors

9/19/2016 3:30:00- 4:30:00 PM

No Cell signal!? GPS quit working!? Have no fear, it is still possible to find your way. We will teach you how to read the signs and symbols of a topographic map and how to associate the two dimensional map with the three dimensions of the land around us. We'll also talk about magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination) and how to take a bearing with a compass. This workshop will likely include some outdoor walking so, please dress comfortably. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own compass. Register here.

Aerial photography with kites

Location:  MakeCentral and Outdoors

9/27/2016 2:30:00- 4:00:00 PM

Come fly a kite! We will be learning how to use kites for aerial photography. Kites are an inexpensive, simple alternative to drones. They do not require FAA licensing and can be flown legally in most places. This workshop will demonstrate using kites for aerial photography. (If it is raining or not windy enough this workshop will be rescheduled) (To register so we can let you know if we need to cancel, etc.)

QGIS Workshop 1  Introduction to QGIS: Vector Data

Location:  Red Cedar West

10/3/2016 3:30:00 - 4:30:00 PM

This workshop will demonstrate how to make a choropleth (color shaded) map and place graduated symbols on it, load shapefiles and .csv table files into QGIS, join data to spatial information and edit features. Register here.

QGIS Workshop 2: Georeferencing

Location:  Red Cedar West

10/10/2016 3:30:00 - 4:30:00 PM

This second workshops adds knowledge of working with raster data in QGIS to the previous vector workshop. Participants will learn how to georeference objects such as a historic map or aerial photo and create traced data from it for basic analysis. Register here.

QGIS Workshop at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station

Location:  W.K. Kellogg Biological Station

10/8/2016 1:00:00 - 4:00:00 PM

This three-hour workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn QGIS, the free and open source geospatial software package. The content of the workshop revolves around a research/planning question using data from Detroit. Skills included in the workshop are making a color-shaded choropleth map, selection and sub-setting data, geocoding within QGIS, joining data together, creating buffers and more. If you have taken other library workshops on QGIS the workshop will review and build on earlier skills, and if you are totally unfamiliar with QGIS this workshop will give you an introduction to the software. Register here.

Geocoding

Location:  Red Cedar West

10/24/2016 3:30:00 - 4:30:00 PM

This workshop will discuss geocoding, which is the process of giving addresses spatial information so they can be used as a dataset in a GIS. Some concepts and challenges involved in geocoding will be discussed, three free simple methods of geocoding will be presented, and there will be an exercise using Excel to clean and format address data and geocode them using QGIS, the free open source geospatial software. Register here.

3D Printing Terrain Maps

Location:  Red Cedar West

11/15/2016 6:00:00 - 7:00:00 PM

This workshop will teach two methods of creating 3D printable models of terrain, one using a simple web application and the other using ArcScene and a Digital Elevation Model. If you have a DEM you want to print, please bring the file, otherwise we will provide one.
