Liquor is a big business in Michigan.
The state has 13,565 "class C" liquor licenses that allow on-premise purchase and consumption. Michigan's bars and restaurants that serve alcohol form the foundation for many cities' entertainment districts, and form a major portion of the state's $15.6 billion restaurant industry.
One indicator of how a bar is faring as a destination is its wholesale liquor purchases from the state. In Michigan, licensees purchase their liquor through a wholesale distribution system that is tracked by the state.
